Focus

The service « Analyses, physical measurements and optical spectroscopy” is opened to all researchers for:

  • Elemental microanalysis C, H, N
  • Circular dichroism spectrometry
  • Polarimetry
  • Luminescence spectrometry

Access to instruments

The researchers who have learned how to use the spectrometers are allowed to take their measurements after agreement of the person in charge of the service.


Analysis request form

The analysis request form must be completed in full and returned to the department with the sample.


Instruments


  • Elemental microanalysis C, H, N

« Flash 2000 » apparatus from ThermoFisher Scientific for the simultaneous analysis of the C, H and N elements on about 1 mg (typical mass) of solid or liquid samples. Two analyses are usually done for each sample.

Analyses absolute accuracy : 0.3%


  • Circular dichroism (CD) spectrometry

Circular dichroism spectrometer “J-810” from Jasco for circular dichroism measurements at wavelength from 190 to 800 nm.

Light source : 150W Xe lamp

Wavelength accuracy:
*± 0.1 nm from 190 to 250 nm
*± 0.3 nm from 250 to 500 nm
*± 0.8 nm from 500 to 800 nm

CD resolution :
*at full scale ± 10 mdeg (‘high sensitivity’) : 0.0005 mdeg
*at full scale ±200 mdeg (‘standard sensitivity’) : 0.01 mdeg
*at full scale ± 2000 mdeg (‘low sensitivity’) : 0.1 mdeg

Accessories:
*Peltier temperature controller PTC-423S/L from Jasco (temperatures from -10 to +110 °C at ± 0.2 °C)
*permanent magnetic field (0.4 T)


  • Polarimetry

Polarimeter “Model 341” from PerkinElmer for optical rotation measurements to ± 85° at a wavelength of 589 nm (Na lamp).

Readout resolution : 0.001°
Accuracy : ± 0.002° for rotations ≤ 1° ; ± 0.2 % for rotations > 1°
Accessory: thermostatted circulator bath F12MB from Julabo (temperatures from -20 to +100 °C at ± 0.02°C).


  • Luminescence spectrometry

 Spectrometer “Fluorolog FL3-22” from HORIBA JobinYvon for steady-state and lifetime luminescence measurements.

Emission wavelengths:
290 – 830 nm (resolution 0.3 nm)

Lifetimes:
200 ps – 1 μs (fluorescence and short lifetimes) and 30 μs – 1 s (phosphorescence)

Excitation sources:

a) Steady-state measurements

Xe lamp 450 W, continuous spectrum from 240 to 600 nm.

b) Lifetime measurements

  • fluorescence and short lifetimes :

8 interchangeable light-emitting diodes (NanoLED) for excitation at 295, 340, 370, 460, 495, 560, 590 and 605 nm (pulse: width 15-20 nm, pulse duration: 1 ns, repetition rate to be fixed between 10 kHz and 1 MHz).

  • phosphorescence  :

pulsed Xe lamp (flash duration : 3 μs). Excitation wavelength: from 240 to 600 nm

Accessories: 

*2 polarizers for anisotropy luminescence measurements
*5 longpass filters (edges 370, 399, 450, 500 and 550 nm)
*thermostatted circulator bath NESLAB RTE-7 D+ (temperatures from 5 to 100 °C at ± 0.01°C)
